Few places in the world combine the intellectual fascination and raw natural beauty of Orgonon, home of one of the 20th Century's most controversial figures, Austrian born physician-scientist Wilhelm Reich.
Wilhelm Reich was a medical doctor and prominent psychoanalyst trained in Vienna under Sigmund Freud. After making path-breaking contributions to psychiatry, he expanded his research to the study of a specific life energy he named orgone.
Seeking a pristine environment for this work, Reich established his home and laboratory on this 200-acre property in Rangeley, Maine, naming it Orgonon.
The Wilhelm Reich Museum: Located within the Orgone Energy Observatory—a striking Bauhaus-style building listed on the National Register of Historic Places—the museum preserves Reich’s study, library, and scientific equipment almost exactly as they were at the time of his death in 1957. Open during the summer season, the museum features self-guided audio/video exhibits, physical artifacts, and a Museum Store offering books, t-shirts, mugs, and souvenirs.
