Description

Sunday, April 7: La Corona – Vigil of the Eclipse, an evening of poetry, prayer, and praise, 6 p.m.

In an interesting intersection of science and religion, the total eclipse of 2024 will occur on the Feast of the Annunciation, commemorating the angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary that she would bear God’s Son, Jesus, into the world. To reflect these cosmic events, The Church of the Good Shepherd will host an evening service of poetry, prayer, and praise: La Corona - Vigil of the Eclipse, on April 7th at 6 PM at 2614 Main Street in Rangeley.

The Annunciation is usually celebrated on March 25 (exactly nine months before the Nativity), but this year, that date would have placed it amid Holy Week and Easter. Easter is determined by the sun and the moon, the Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox: March 31st this year. Because the celebration of Christ’s resurrection and his glorious eclipse of the grave outshines all else, the observation of other fixed-date feasts is transferred to the following week. That means the feast of the Annunciation will be celebrated this year on the Monday after the Octave of Easter, the day of the eclipse!
