Fishing in the Rangeley Lakes Region

A Haven for Anglers

Nestled amidst forest-clad mountains of the Rangeley Lakes Region, in its glistening lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers, you will find world-class trout and salmon fishing. Here, nature's beauty is so extraordinary that even the most dedicated angler may find it hard to focus solely on their fishing.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or looking to learn a new hobby, the Rangeley Lakes Region area offers some of the best trout and salmon fishing in Maine.

The Rangeley Lakes Region's fame as a fly-fishing destination for brook trout is well-deserved. Maine, especially the Rangeley Region, is one of the only places in the United States where wild native Brook trout can live in both rivers and lakes.  These unique natural resources, big lakes and fast-running rivers allow for the trout's large size.

Over time, salmon were introduced to our waters, making it a haven for both of these beloved species. As the ice melts on the lakes and ponds in early to mid-May, anglers are treated to excellent fly-fishing opportunities. During spring, anglers troll or cast with streamers, lures and bait on the lakes while the streams come to life after the spring run-off, usually in May and June.

Though many varieties of fish can be caught year-round, many can only be caught seasonally. Be sure to familiarize yourself with Maines Fishing Seasons and Laws, based on region and body of water, before heading out on a solo trip.  You can buy your fishing license locally at the Sports Shops or online at Licenses & Permits: Fishing.

Fishing April through September

Open water trout fishing season opens in the North Zone of Maine on April 1st. Rangeley's guides are highly recommended if you’re looking for local experts. A sports shop is a great place to learn about local hatches, fly patterns and the state’s latest trout-stocking efforts.

For salmon fishing, try out Rangeley Lake Fishing Charters.

Fly-fishing lessons are also offered May – September at Rangeley Region Sport Shop, a local Fly-Fishing Shop and Guide Service, which has been operational since 1945. Learn the techniques from their experienced staff, and you can make the perfect cast.

Prepare for an angler's paradise in the Rangeley Lakes Region, where nature's beauty and superb fishing combine to create an unforgettable world-class trout and salmon fishing experience.

Ice Fishing

Under the frozen sheet of ice atop a lake or pond, landlocked salmon and trout are still swimming strong. Rangeley Regions local outfitters know the best spots and offer guide services during Maine's ice-fishing season.

Free Fishing Weekend

Cast a line or set a tip-up during one of Maine’s Free Fishing Weekends, June 3-4, 2023 and February 17-18, 2024.

On these days, any person (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked) may fish without a license. All other laws and regulations apply on these days.

Explore the Thrills of Fat Tire Biking in Rangeley, Maine

Rangeley, Maine, is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and when the snow blankets the ground, it becomes a haven for fat tire biking. Nestled at the base of Saddleback Mountain in Maine's western mountains, the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center is your gateway to a world of adventure on two oversized wheels.

Groomed for Excellence

At the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center, fat tire bikers are in for a treat. The meticulously groomed fat tire biking trails wind through this picturesque landscape, making it a prime destination for riders seeking an exhilarating winter experience. As you explore the winter wonderland, share the trails with Nordic skiers and snowshoers.

A World-Class Trail System

The Rangeley Lakes Trail Center continues investing in its world-class multi-use trail system, ensuring it caters to riders of all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned fat biker or a beginner looking for a new adventure, these trails offer the perfect setting for your journey.

The Beauty of Fat Biking

A fat bike is more like a tank with five-inch-wide tires than a traditional bicycle. This tank-like quality allows it to easily conquer various terrains, rolling over almost anything in its path. Its mountain bike-like frame, with a broader fork and hubs to accommodate the hefty tires, gives it the agility to navigate flowy, single-track trails through the snowy woods.

Staying on Top of Snow

The primary purpose of a fat bike's fatness is to keep it on top of compacted snow. This opens up a world of possibilities, including trails groomed for Nordic skiing, specifically for fat biking, snowmobiling routes, paths packed down by snowshoers, and even snowy roads.

The Perfect Complement to Skiing

David Hunger, an expert, points out that fat biking and skiing are perfect counterparts. Fat biking shines When snow conditions are less than ideal for skiing. It's not only less physically demanding than Alpine skiing, but it's also less technically challenging. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a first-timer, fat biking is an accessible sport. If you've ever ridden a bike, you can ride a fat bike. For an easy ride, opt for wide, flat trails. If you crave more adventure, seek out the single-track trails for a thrilling challenge.

In Rangeley, fat tire biking is more than just a sport; it's a unique way to experience the region's winter beauty. So, if you're ready to conquer the snowy trails, embrace the freedom of fat tire biking and discover the exhilaration of a winter adventure in Rangeley, Maine.
