Since 2007, the High Peaks Alliance has worked to keep Maine’s High Peaks Region wild, accessible, and open to traditional uses. This volunteer nonprofit brings together hunters, hikers, birders, anglers, loggers, snowmobile and ATV riders, Maine Guides, cross-country skiers, mountain bikers, and others committed to conservation, public access, and responsible recreation.

HPA works across more than one million acres of western Maine backcountry, conserving important natural areas, improving recreational access, and collaborating with communities and regional partners. The Alliance has helped protect community gems such as Mosher Hill Falls, Shiloh Pond, and Walrath Woods, supporting hiking, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, paddling, and other outdoor activities.

Through the High Peaks Initiative, HPA collaborates with organizations and public agencies to strengthen stewardship and recreation throughout the region. Its Rec Rangers maintain more than 100 miles of trails, campsites, and access points, helping keep these places safe, sustainable, and welcoming for residents and visitors.

Visitors can explore the three Fly Rod Crosby Trails, the Perham Stream Birding Trail, Walrath Woods, and the Scenic 7 Hiking Challenge, which features seven distinctive landscapes. HPA is also advancing the Sandy River Bridge project, which will connect the Whistlestop Trail to downtown Farmington and further improve access to the region’s outdoor resources.
